Important Information for Parents

If you are a parent or guardian of someone considering the Learn in L.A. Film Program by Film Connection, we recognize that you have an important decision to make. In order to choose the best education option for your child or loved one, you need to be armed with the facts. To help with this decision, we’ve provided some important information about our film school below. Feel free to bookmark this page and use it for further reference.

WHY WE’RE HERE (A BIT OF HISTORY)

Nearly thirty years ago, we noticed how film schools and other trade schools had developed the practice of baiting students with inflated promises of success, taking their money, processing them through a curriculum, and leaving them with virtually no industry connections and no job prospects—only a fairly useless diploma and a lot of debt. When we realized that most film professionals (even the ones who went to film school) claimed that their REAL education in filmmaking came from working one-on-one with industry professionals on real film shoots, we decided to combine the best elements of traditional education with a one-on-one learning approach—and Film Connection was born.

Since that time, we’ve educated thousands of students utilizing this mentor-apprentice approach—but more importantly, we’ve helped the majority of these students launch productive careers in the film industry simply by educating them in the real world. Because of the many connections we’ve made over the years through our unique approach, our Learn in L.A. Film Program can offer students the chance to learn the movie business from real Hollywood industry insiders, and can even give our students the chance to pitch their own movie to actual Hollywood executives—something no other film school in the world can offer.

A PRACTICAL APPROACH

In this industry, what Hollywood is looking for is not how many years you went to film school, but how good you are at what you do. At Film Connection, we’ve come to understand that the fastest way to learn a job is to do the job—and we’ve also discovered that placing our students with working film professionals helps them learn the job much more quickly. Because of the very nature of our practical, hands-on approach to learning, our students can learn more about real filmmaking in six months than most film students learn in 3-4 years using the traditional approach.

WHY WE’RE SO AFFORDABLE

The fact that the Learn in L.A. Film Program is only 13,500 (compared to 70,000 or more at other film schools) has sometimes caused people to question whether our program is “too good to be true.”

Here’s the truth about why we’re so affordable: we have no “campus” to maintain, no expensive film equipment to buy, no excessively large staff to pay—in effect, the mentor-apprentice approach requires very little overhead. Because we educate our students in real Hollywood production companies and on existing film shoots, they are learning on existing equipment within functional production companies, not on a separate campus or simulated studio environments. Sometimes the best solution to a problem also happens to be the most affordable solution. When you do it right, learning the film business does NOT have to cost a small fortune. We’ve been proving that fact for nearly 30 years.

The bottom line is that we are a fully accredited school with a comprehensive curriculum and a proven track record of success. It just so happens that we can offer this education for a fraction of the cost of other schools simply by providing a smarter alternative approach.

STABILITY AND RELIABILITY

The Film Connection has been in business since 1983, and continually updates its curriculum to stay current with the times and technology. We have placed thousands of students for film apprenticeships over the years, and seen most of them find lucrative positions within the film industry. Our corporate offices are in the heart of Hollywood, at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, so wherever we place your child for apprenticing in the Los Angeles area, rest assured we are not far away. We also welcome emails or phone calls anytime there is a question or concern. We are here, and we are not going anywhere.
